Frequently asked Questions

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a heightened altered state of awareness. It represents the theta and/or alpha (brainwave patterns) states, which are the states between beta (awake) and delta (sleep). This typically is a relaxed state where individuals are still consciously aware of the surrounding environment.

Is hypnosis approved by the medical community?

Yes. In 1958, the American Medical Association approved the use of hypnosis.

What is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is simply the use of hypnosis to address your conscious way of thinking. The idea is to marry these two elements, so one’s conscious and subconscious thoughts are congruent and maintain a healthy focus towards the client’s chosen direction. As the name indicates, it is a method often used for therapeutic purposes. Many Hypnotherapists also have a related background, including psychology, certified counseling, etc.

What is the difference between “hypnotherapy” and “psychotherapy”?

Hypnotherapy uses the subconscious as its primary tool for the changing of one’s habits and/or behaviors. Psychoanalysis uses more of a conscious awareness, focusing more on one’s conscious dialogue that governs daily activity and will rarely utilize hypnosis.

Can anyone be hypnotized?

Yes, with the exception of the intellectually challenged (IQ of 75 or below), very young children, and those under the influence of drugs or alcohol during a session. There are varying degrees of the state of hypnosis, often determined by the focus of the individual session and the suggestibility of the subject. Most importantly, if one has a strong desire to make permanent changes to his/her life, this can be accomplished through hypnosis.

Does one lose control when under hypnosis?

No. A person under hypnosis is not in a trance, hypnosis is merely a stage of relaxation. You are as aware and in control as you are right now. You will never do anything that you wouldn’t normally do and you will never violate any religious, moral or political values.

Will I be asleep?

No. You are not asleep. Hypnosis is not a sleep state.

How long does it take to produce desired results?

Everyone is different mentally, physically and emotionally. Therefore results vary depending on the complexity of the habit/behavior and the individuals themselves. Results are often noticed after the very first session, while other more significant results may take a few sessions. As per our NHC Code of Ethics, NHC will never keep anyone in his/her program longer than required.

Is hypnosis safe?

Yes, it is. It is important to understand that hypnosis can not make a person do anything they don’t want to do, consciously.

What can hypnotherapy do for me?

The list of applications for hypnotherapy is extensive and versatile. These include, but are not limited to, quitting smoking, weight loss, and other health issues, overcoming phobias and fears, learning skill enhancement, anxiety, anger & stress control, alcohol and other addictions, behavior modification, and more. Contact NHC to find out whether Hypnotherapy is a viable option to help you overcome your personal challenge.

Is hypnotherapy the same as seen in stage performances?

No. Hypnotherapy and stage hypnosis are vastly different in both application and outcome. Stage hypnosis is for entertainment only, and its sole purpose is to remove the power of the individual for an undetermined outcome. Hypnotherapy is for the purpose of enhancing and reclaiming the power of the individual for their own purpose, which is predetermined and agreed upon prior to its application.

Does hypnotherapy really work?

Yes, it does.
